A few small habits keep a piece looking the way it did the day it arrived.

Everyday wear

Put jewellery on last — after perfume, hairspray and hand cream — and take it off first. The oils and alcohols in cosmetics are what dull a finish fastest.

Take pieces off before swimming, showering, exercising or sleeping. Chlorine and salt water are particularly hard on plated finishes.

Cleaning

• Gold vermeil — wipe gently with a soft dry cloth. Never use a silver polishing cloth or dip; both strip the plating.
• Sterling silver — a silver polishing cloth restores the shine. Tarnish is normal and reversible.
• Pearls and soft stones — wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately. No cleaner, no ultrasonic.

Storage

Keep each piece in its own pouch, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Storing pieces loose together lets harder stones scratch softer metals.

Chains last longest fastened shut before they're put away — it's the single easiest way to avoid knots.
